COMPUTER CRASH!
During the recent snow storms over the holidays a power outage caused our computer to crash;
consequently we lost our newsletter mailing list.
Many people write to tell us how much they look forward to our newsletters, and how they seem to speak to them perfectly according to what is happening in their horsemanship journey.
So if you do not receive a newsletter by the end of January we were unable to recover your e-mail address.
If you want to remain on our mailing list you will need to go to Join our mailing list"
However, here's the good news; if in the past you filled out a registration form for one of our classes then we should still have your contact information. It will just be a matter of time for us to reenter everything into our new computer, once we get it.
Our e-mail will only be checked a few times a week through Jan. 15th until we get this all sorted out. So if you are wanting to sign up for a class be patient or give us a call at 308-730-2150 or 308-346-5663

DECEMBER NEWSLETTER "Balance and Harmony"

Dear Horse lovers,
"Natural Horsemanship is all about balance and harmony." Ann Burkholder
Don't we all want to achieved that with our horses? What exactly does this mean?
Ann recently wrote about what this means to her after spending the day with me and my horses at my place. In this article I will share with you some of her thoughts as well as my own.
When you have balance and harmony with your horse:
* both you and the horse are respectful of each other which leads to softness, and a warm manner of relating to each other.
* both you and the horse are at home and relaxed with each other.
* you always ask with softness yet are able to use effective firmness when necessary.
* you are able to progress in consistent patterns because you have a sequential plan to follow.
* both you and the horse are calm and know how to get in a learning frame of mind and stay there.
* you have created a learning environment based on love, respect, and positive reinforcement.
*you know what to expect from each other because you are consistent.
Through her observations, Ann shared these important characteristics a horseman must have in order to achieve balance & harmony:
* loving kindness
* fairness
* consistency
* softness until the horse makes the decision to change that
* effective firmness; and doesn't take any crap
* playfulness; has an exuberance for the horse, which the horse begins to mimic
* confidence; causing the horse to gain confidence from the person
* compassion; the best interest of the horse is in their heart
* leadership; like a trail boss who knows the way, doesn't get lost, & makes sure you arrive
During her visit Ann witnessed horses that:
* know what the rules are and are comfortable and content with those rules
* know that they are in control of how soft or firm the exchange is
* have made the choice to respond to softness to avoid the consequence
* know they are loved, will be treated fairly and protected by their leader
* know the drill---and that is comforting to them and empowering at the same time
* have confidence and empowerment from their leader which causes them to OFFER with willingness.
Here is a list of questions to ask yourself.
The list was generated from some of the things Ann learned.
* Are you asking, or are you being demanding?
* Do you have a real phase one?
* If you do not have a real phase one, are your other phases EFFECTIVE?
* Are you consistent enough for learning to occur, yet unpredicable enough to challenge a left-brained horse?
* Do you struggle with self confidence?
* Are you intimidated by your horse in certain situations?
* Have you created the appropriate environment to set your horses up for success?
* Are you observant enough of what your horse is feeling and telling you?
* Are you fast enough with your responses, or are you always late?
* Are you proactive or reactive?
* Are you more in tune with yourself than with your horse?
* Are you specific enough in your communication?
* Are you effectively firm instead of just "making noise"?
* Do you yell at your horse? (Asking for energy does not mean yelling---asking for energy means creating natural excitement and joy.)
* Can you create excited energy?
* Do you start every exchange with your horse with the words: Let's ..... instead of You....?
* Do you have a positive attitude?---Can you respond with "How interesting..." instead of "I said to..."?
As you look at this list of questions you may realize that we all bring some baggage with us to our natural horsemanship journey. I know that I did. I had a lot of bad habits to break and attitudes to change. It hasn't always been easy or pleasant. However, I did not let my baggage impede my progress, because my desire for excellence was stronger.
I hope that as you look back on 2006 you can see the progress you have made, even if it looks like baby steps. I hope that 2007 brings you closer to the kind of balance and harmony that you desire.
Ann brought her young daughters with her for this lesson, and I was very proud of the way my horses handled these precious ones. Here is what she had to say:
"My girls (age 6 and 4) were at home and relaxed with Sherry's horses because Sherry's horses were at home and relaxed with them. They (the horses) are at peace in their environment, and it shows.
I expected my oldest to do well, but the 4 year old is timid by nature and I was pleasantly amazed at how Sherry's horses boosted her confidence. What a wonderful atmosphere of learning and sharing that Sherry has created with her animals.
I look forward to watching my kids excel at NH since they will begin with a clean slate and an excitement that children are blessed with. I look forward to learning from them!"
As we go into a new year I encourage you to set new goals and open your mind to more ways of learning and progressing. Your horse will be glad you did! Here is what Ann wrote as a goal after her day with me:
"Figure out some more time to play with Sherry so that I could be effective instead of jumping around like a crazy woman trying to get respect from a horse that is standing around laughing at me. Well, I have now witnessed how it should be----I hope that I can continue to progress in that direction at home."
I'm confident that Ann will acheive her dreams and goals because she not only has heart and desire, but she already has a lot of insight because she is a very observant person. She can see what a lot of other people may be missing, now all she has to do is put what she sees with her eyes and feels with her heart into her hands.

TOURNAMENT GAMES WINTER SERIES
The Tournament Game Days are a BLAST!
We will have them in conjunction with private lesson weekends in Omaha, Lincoln, and Grand Island.
They will usually be on Saturday mornings for 9:00-12:00
We will limit the number to 16 participants so be sure to register in advance by e-mailing Sherry at sej@carrollsweb.com.
Another Two Day Clinic & Tournament Games Saturday evening at Madison County Fairgrounds in January.

Other Learning Opportunities this Winter
Host an equine psychology class this winter:
I had a wonderful equine psychology class at Cindy's house in Hickman this summer. She will be hosting another one in February.
Host a LEARNING DEMONSTRATION for a 4-h group, saddle club, or group of friends:
I will bring my horses or use a problem horse from the group to give you an evening or afternoon of learning by watching. Interactions with questions and answers will be a big part of the learning environment. So for those who are always wanting to audit or are just curious about what we do in natural horsemanship this is a perfect opportunity. I promise you will learn a lot. It costs less per person than a clinic or private lesson.

WOMEN'S CONFIDENT LEADERSHIP CAMPS
The Women’s Confident Leadership Camp at the Calamus Outfitters Ranch near Burwell, NE on Oct. 6-9 was a life changing experience for many. It was better than I expected in everyway. Even the weather didn't stop us, although it did dampen us.

Cattle Drive and Trail Ride 2007
Our next cattle drive at Calamus Outfitters will be in the spring. The exact date is still to be announced.
We are also planning a 16 mile trail ride in conjunction with the Burwell Rodeo in July! Look for details soon!
FAMILY VACATION AT CALAMUS OUTFITTERS RANCH
Rent a cabin $75/night for two people $100/night for 4 people. Sleeps six maximum.
Includes a kitchen (microwave & frig), bathroom (shower only, no tub), air-conditioning, picnic table, and grill. Two bunk beds (one double, one single)
Stall is $10 a night. Bring your own hay.
Exciting new pens, arena, and round pens were built this month!
Horses must be current on all vaccinations.
Private Instruction is $25/hour at the ranch.
Lower group rates per hour, or a package deal per day.
Call to arrange your special package deal for a small group.
Lease one of my horses $25 a day.
Miles of trail riding, fishing, boating, canoeing, tanking, swimming, etc.
Lodge is available to lease for larger groups. 10-20 people $350 a night.
There are also camper RV hookups close to the Calamus Lake.
There is a small house in Burwell available to rent for only $65 per day. It has two bedrooms a bath, kitchen and living room. However it is about 15 miles from the ranch, but only 2 miles from me.
Don't forget the fall cattle Drive, Oct. 15-17th only $75 plus room
If you are interested in any of the above ideas please let me know, as the cabins do book up quickly especially during hunting season.
This opportunity is available all year because I also have access to an indoor arena; however, it is about 20 miles to the facility.
There is a rental fee of $12 per hour for the indoor arena.

DEMONSTRATION LOCATIONS!
We are looking for demonstration locations such as county fairs, equine related events, stables, horseclubs etc.
These demonstrations are a cost effective way to introduce horselovers to natural horsemanship ideas which can lead to a safer and more enjoyable relationship with your horse.
They are also inspirational and educational.
