JUNE NEWSLETTER
Hello everyone,

"Experience teaches only the teachable." -- Aldous Huxley

May was a very busy month, as I had 5 clinics. The experiences at each clinic taught me more about myself both as a teacher and a horsewoman. I am very pleased with the results of each class, even though the number of participants at each clinic was quite low. It seems so many people have such busy schedules these days it is hard to fit in everything they want to do.

I will keep making as many clinics available in as many areas as possible at an affordable price because so many people keep telling me they want to come to the “next one”. All of the participants in the May clinics also expressed a desire to attend another one as soon as possible. Participating in just one class is definitely not enough to absorb and learn all there is, if you want to keep growing and progressing in a natural way.

As I think about the difference between the natural way and other ways it is mostly about attitude, relationship, time, listening and effective communication. There is definitely more than one way to train a horse. I have been getting feedback from a few of my students about their frustrations when trying to share their discoveries and knowledge with other people. After attending one of my clinics they are often very surprised and pleased at the positive results they get and it is only natural to want to share their success with others. Sometimes in their excitement they are confused or even hurt by negative comments they may get from others who perhaps don’t understand where they are coming from. Other times they find conflicting views about horse training.

A quote by Cullen Hightower seems to be an appropriate response to this dilemma, "Wisdom is what's left after we run out of personal opinions."

A person who is keenly interested in learning everything about horses will read books, watch videos, get quality instruction, hang out with other horse people and asked lots of questions. Whenever you meet an experienced horseman, you listen carefully to what is said. Sometimes you don’t agree or understand fully what the horseman is saying, but you listen intently with an open mind just the same. Your natural instinct should tell you what is good advice and what is not.

A savvy horseman once told me a very important observation he’d made about horses. He explained that after he’d come home from his day job, he’d train his horses in the evenings. Sometimes, at the end of a long day at work, he was tired and in a bad mood as he was trying to train a young horse. When you’re in a bad mood, grumpy, tired, stressed, and ornery, just put the horse away; don’t bother trying to train him. The horse will learn more by having the day off than he will learn being subjected to your impatience and anger.

So give people the day off who aren’t interested in hearing about your success with natural horsemanship. Others will learn by our example and they may start to listen or watch with interest as they see you making progress. Positive action will mean more than words.

I have heard other experienced horsemen say things like, “Take the time it takes”, “Don’t look back”, “Sit deep in the saddle”, “Use the entire ring”, “Never stop showing” and “Be gentle, but firm too.” Those expressions are still great advice for working with horses and double as meaningful metaphors for our daily living as well. I have found so many concepts and principles, which are effective means of training a horse that transfer directly to our personal lives as well. We will become a better person by becoming a better horseman.

As a horse lover excited to share what you have learned with others remember, no matter how frustrated or confused you get there is at least one person who is always willing to listening to you and encourage you, and that one person is me.

"Teachers open the door. You enter by yourself." -- Chinese proverb

EXCITING SUMMER NEWS!

DISCOUNTS!
I am giving some discounts to those students who have attended more than one of my classes or sign up with a deposit at least a month early. I also give away free classes to those who help me get at least 6 other people signed up and attending a class. Call for more specific details.

WOMEN'S CONFIDENT LEADERSHIP CAMPS
The Women’s Confident Leadership Camp at the Calamus Outfitters Ranch near Burwell, NE on Oct. 6-9 is full. However, there is a waiting list in case of a cancellation, and there will be more of these Camps to come in 2007. In fact I am going to schedule several of them. So if you are interested at all it would be best if you let me know as soon as possible that you would like to attend one and what month would be best for you. Specific dates will be announced soon.

BEST BUYS
As I have been researching the cost of other clinics. Most other clinicians are charging $300-$600 for a weekend and it doesn’t include lodging, stalls, or food. The camps include everything for 3-5 days for as low as $400 and up to $800 depending on the number of participants and how many other classes you have attended. The camps are definitely the best buy for the money.

KIDS CAMPS
I am extending the deadline for sign ups for the Calamus Kids Camp on June 27-29 and July 11-13. I have also lowered the age limit, as many people who expressed interest had children in the 9-10 year old range and I didn’t have much interest from the older teens as of yet, but they are still welcome. Please sign up as soon as possible for these camps as I am limiting the numbers and the adult sponsors. We also plan to announce dates for these camps next year as well.

CHANCE RIDGE
I am so delighted to announce that there is only one spot left for the clinic at Chance Ridge in Elkhorn on June 10-11 so don’t miss out on your chance at Chance Ridge. It will be the first full class in a while, but you will still get lots of attention as Keith is coming with me. We will also be doing a demo with a “dream team” on Sat. night from 6:30-8:30 sponsored by Lamp Light Stables. It is only $6 for 4-H kids and $10 for adults.

SIOUX CITY
I am excited about going to the Parelli tour stop in Sioux City this weekend. I am sure that I will see a lot of you there. I will also be doing a clinic in Sioux City on June 17-18 there is still time to sign up!I'm sure there will be some excited people in the area after seeing the savvy team perform their magic. They truly are inspiring and awesome. Words just don’t describe the connection you see and experience from the Parellis.

TRAIL RIDE
On June 24-25 is the Whoa Cripes Trail Ride near Taylor, NE. If you want to come camp and ride it is only $5.00 a person. Novice trail riders are welcome. I will be giving a class for these riders and taking them on some easy trails for a minimal additional fee.

REVISITING MANY ARENAS LATE SUMMER AND EARLY FALL.
As requested we will be returning to many favorite arenas. These are all quality facilities with friendly owners who are excited to have us back for repeated clinics. The sooner you sign up the better. I will give a discount to anyone who signs up with a deposit by the early bird deadline. (EBD)

July 22-23 at American Legacy in Omaha (EBD June 22)
Sept. 9-10 Curtis College in Curtis (EBD August 9)
Sept. 16-17 BKT Arena in Lincoln (EBD August 16)
Sept. 23-24 Still Waters Ranch in Hickman (EBD August 23)
Sept. 30-Oct. 1 Cottonwood Creek Stable near Hastings (EBD August 30)

FURTHERING MY EDUCATION
I will be attending Parelli, Ray Hunt, Dennis Reis and Clinton Anderson seminars this summer to further my education, so there will be some weekends that I am not available. I will be gone June 3-4, July 8-10, August 26-27 and Sept. 2-4.

SUMMER WEEKEND DATES STILL OPEN
July 15-16, and 29-30; August 5-6, 12-13, and 19-20

These are the weekend dates I still have open this summer if you would like to book a class or demonstration in your area or even a private lesson.

Check out the many classes we teach on the “class descriptions” page. It could even be an equine psychology class in an air-conditioned home with interesting and fun simulations, videos, and role-play activities.

A teaching demonstration is another good idea for a 4-H group or saddle club that is very cost effective. I will be doing one for a saddle club in Syracuse on June 12th.

Here’s another idea, come and spend the weekend with me at my place for two or more full days of private instruction. Bring a horse or use one or more of mine.
I have a spare bedroom, or for more privacy you could stay in my parents basement or rent a nearby cabin. Call to make individual arrangements.
It would be fun and a great learning experience. I seem to do things much slower at home than in a clinic situation. It is a more realistic environment.

CLINIC REPORTS and BOOK INTERVIEWS
Be sure to check the website regularly as I will be adding clinic reports, new pictures and testimonials that students share with me.

If you have a story about a horse dream that was nearly destroyed or you just want to share your success with the world, let me know. I will be interviewing people this summer for my book.

Thanks for reading and hope to see you on the trail soon!

Happy Trails,
Sherry Jarvis

PS: Look for the monthly training tip soon if you are on my mailing list. If you are not join the mailing list today for more tips and inspiring reading.

DEMONSTRATION LOCATIONS!
We are looking for demonstration locations such as county fairs, equine related events, stables, horseclubs etc.

These demonstrations are a cost effective way to introduce horselovers to natural horsemanship ideas which can lead to a safer and more enjoyable relationship with your horse.

They are also inspirational and educational.

Please contact us, if you know of an excellent location for such an event.

Thanks,
Sherry
