NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER "The Journey Continues (7 Steps in the Cycle)
Dear Horse lovers,

"The Journey Continues" was the theme of the recent alumni women's horsemanship camp at the Calamus Outfitters Ranch near Burwell, NE. Participants found out that continueing the journey is both laboring and joyful.

I have noticed there seems to be a pattern or cycle as we continue the journey.

1. EXCITEMENT!

The journey begins with lots of excitment as we look forward to a particular event. We can relate this to expecting a first child. There is a lot to prepare for during this first stage of the journey. And it is often filled with both fears and joyfulness. When a person purchases their first horse, or signs up for a camp or a clinic they often feel this way. The anticipation is both exciting, and stressful as one makes preparations for the new journey.

2. REALIZATION COUPLED WITH DOUBT

A person starts out thinking how exciting this new event will be, but this thinking is often followed with feelings of doubt, like: "What did I get myself into? "Can I do this?" or "Why am I here?"

This reality check followed by doubt often goes something like this:

I have my first horse, it's reality,"but now what?" Doubts grow even bigger if things don't go as you dreamed, or seem harder than you ever imagined them to be.

I finally made it to a clinic, but you begin thinking, "I made a mistake, this is too advanced or too easy for me, or maybe I don't need this stuff, or even I do need this stuff but I'm not ready for all of this yet."

The first two steps in the pattern may be considered beginnings. Some people love them and others hate them. Some people really look forward to beginnings and never finish anything, while others hate new beginnings they would rather get lost somewhere in the middle where things don't change much and then there are those who can't wait to get to the finish line.

3. ACCEPTANCE AND SEARCHING FOR ADVICE

This is where the person begins to settle into the fact that this journey is a reality and even though they have some doubts about it and their abilities, they realize they may as well make the best of the situation. The steps during acceptance & searching for advice go something like this:

I accept the fact that I don't know all there is to know about: (having a baby, owning a horse, riding, etc.)

Since I don't know how to handle all of the problems and situations which pop up, I seek answers by talking with others who have been through the same experience asking for advice.

I read books, watch educational videos, talk with experts, and find coaches, trainers, or instructors for guidance on the journey.

It is an individual choice to either accept this advice and guidance by trying new things or not.

It will be an uncomfortable process to make the personal changes needed in order to continue the journey with positive progress.

It will be darn painful to accept personal weaknesses, and quit blaming others for problems or failures.

I make the decision to move forward with excellence or not.

4. TRUST AND HARD WORK

First we are excited about the new adventure, then reality sets in and we doubt ourselves, next we accept we don't have all the answers so we seek help. After we make the decision to move forward with excellence we learn to trust the knowledge we have gained from reputable sources. And last, there is no getting around it, we have to work hard at applying everything we have learned in order for it to work.

Like step three this is the middle. It is where things seem to go on forever! We think:

"Will I ever have this baby?"

"Will this horse ever get it, or more importantly will I ever get it?"

At a clinic: I am getting bored or worse yet frustrated. I am definitely out of my comfort zone and the challenges seem bigger than I can handle.

I wonder if I will ever have a break through.

"Do I really have to keep practicing this until I get it? "

"There has to be an easier way! "

Many people want to give up at this point because they want the excitement of the beginning or prefer the satisfied feeling of the ending. However, some people love the middle because they can feel the proccess, or sometimes they are procrastinator who never want to finish anything. Whether you enjoy the middle or not, the fact is, the middle usually takes the longest and involves a lot of perseverance, consistency, repetition, practice, and patience.

5. BREAK THROUGHS

Now we are at the birthing stage and getting close to the ending or culmination of the pregnancy, a precious new life. (or a true partnership relationship with your horse)

For those who have been through labor they know the intensity and pain involved in this labor of love. Thankfully it doesn't last nine months. But the effort required in a much shorter amount of time is so much greater when it is compared to the middle stages.

This is what break throughs are like in your horsemanship journey. We work really hard and all of a sudden it gets even harder. This is the moment we are about to make a major break through which will change our life with our horse forever. This is when all the hard work of the middle is paying dividends. A new relationship with respect and trust is finally being developed into a partnership. Sometimes it may seem like you are going backwards. Then all of a sudden, there it is, the birth is complete, and the labor pains are over, or so you think.

6. JOY/LOVE/RELATIONSHIP

Finally an ending! There the precious little one lies in the arms of a loving mother looking back, and the realization comes with excitement: it is another new beginning and the journey continues all over again.

Just when we think we have perfected our horsemanship skills and have arrived at the end of our journey (we know it all) something humbling will come along to steal the joy, confidence and the relationship we have developed with our horse. We must not let this happen! We have to get back on and ride through the pattern again. If we do, we will become even better horsemen.

7. EXCITEMENT ONCE AGAIN!

Go back to the beginning again, and that is the cycle of life. We could call numbers 5-6 "endings", but is there really ever an ending? Not until it's over. And, when is it over?

The "JOURNEY CONTINUES" no matter where we are on the cycle.

Happy Trails,
Sherry Jarvis

These articles are not only informative with training tips, but they are also inspirational and can motivate positive personal growth in many areas of your life.

We now have over 70 members on our Heart in Your Hand Yahoo Chat Group.
This group is dedicated to natural horsemanship students lead by Sherry & Keith Jarvis whose aim is to help both the horse and rider to become even more successful by presenting a balanced foundation from which you can build a confident, trusting, respectful relationship, without sacrificing the spirit of either the horse or the human. This is a place to share natural horsemanship philosophies and how horses change our lives including those little victories/defeats that don’t mean anything to the "normal" crowd, to have a place to celebrate/vent leadership issues, blinding flashes of the obvious, or brainstorm creative ideas! We will be able to organize natural play days, tournaments, and post information and announcements of natural horsemanship happenings.

This group is by invitation only. You are officially invited by receiving this newsletter. If you would like to join Heart in Your Hand Horsemanship's Yahoo group please e-mail Leigh the moderator at freeman@diodecom.net
