OCTOBER NEWSLETTER "How's Your "A" Game?"
Dear Horse lovers,

September has been extremely busy for me, and I have enjoyed every minute of it. I am way behind on writing diaries for clinics as the clinics have been back to back with not enough time in between to write. The Grand Island and Hastings clinics were full, and many of them are expecting me to come back for private lessons on a regular basis, which is great for me, because this is a little closer to home. However I really don't mind the travel, because I love what I am doing. It is much better than a 9-5 job. I do put in a lot more than 8 hours a day 7 days a week now, but it doesn't seem like work. I want to encourage all of you to find what you love doing and go for it! You will never regret it, even if your pocket book is a little lighter. You will get used to it and the sacrifices will be worth it because of the peace that comes when you find your purpose.

I was recently in Council Bluffs for a speaking engagement on conflict management. One of the things I talked about was putting on your "A" Game when conflicts arise. This means you stay calm, cool, and collected during the conflict. It means you are mentally, emotionally, and physically fit. You can smile with appropriate responses, and set appropriate boundaries. It means you can be as soft as possible but yet as firm as necessary.

My "A" Game was tested to the limit while driving through Omaha during 8:00 rush hour traffic on Wed. morning on route to the Bass Pro Shop where the meeting was held. While the traffic seemed to be closing in on me my state of claustrophobia was causing me to act like a right brained horse. I kept telling myself BREATH, SMILE remain calm, cool, and collected. However, my mental, emotional and physical fitness was wearing thin, and all I could think about was "PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, let me get off this freeway NOW!" Those other cars and trucks were not respecting my boundaries and I couldn't figure out if I needed to be soft or firm. With a death grip on the steering wheel, I was not able to do either. When I finally arrived at my destination I was shaking and quite hyper, it is a good thing I hadn't drank any coffee yet. It took me quite a while to get left brained again.

Before I left Kathy's place near Valley that morning, this country girl was anxious and expected the trip to Council Bluffs to be unpleasant, but it was much worse than I thought it would be. To some of you it is a normal thing because you are desensitized to it. But to me it was dangerous and I was full of fear. When it was all over, I knew that I would rather ride a bucking horse than drive through that traffic again. I didn't care if it was 100 miles to drive around the city, I was determined that there had to be an easier way to get back to Chance Ridge. Fortunately I found a better way back, even though it was much longer, and of course the traffic at 11:00 was very minimal. Thank goodness, because I don't know if I could have done that twice in one day.

I tell you that story because there are so many metaphors we can apply to our horses. That very evening I had a young girl bring a horse to Chance Ridge for a private lesson. My experience earlier in the day, helped me understand what the horse was going through. This horse rides beautiful at home alone. However, put him in a show ring when another horse comes up behind him he bucks. The poor horse was feeling exactly like I was while driving on the freeway. (CLAUSTROPHOBIC, FEARFUL, RIGHT-BRAINED AND OUT OF CONTROL.) I wanted to buck my way off that freeway. In fact an air-lift from a helicopter would have been nice.

Just like traffic on the freeway a crowded arena or trail can feel like a traffic jam to a horse. The other horses are not respecting his boundaries, and this poor horse doesn't know whether to be soft or firm with the other horses. When he doesn't have an "A" Game to put on, he reacts the only way he knows how, especially if his rider doesn't have an "A" Game to lead him through the traffic confidently. I know I would have felt better on the freeway if a confident driver would have been driving the car instead of me. We need to become confident drivers for our horses so they can trust us when the traffic gets wild.

We need to have our "A" Game on when situations come up for our horses. We also need to teach them to have an "A" Game. Our horses can learn to control their emotions. The reason they don't is we always try to calm them down, or reward them for their out of control behavior, instead of helping them learn to control their behaviors. YES it is possible!

Knowing my "A" Game helped me survive the freeway. But I want to learn to do more than mearly survive the experience. I may never enjoy it, but I can learn to overcome my fears through traffic driving education and experience. I need someone to ride with me next time to give me a little support, guidance, and encouragement, and that is also what your horse needs from you.

Can you be that kind of person for your horse?

Happy Trails,
Sherry Jarvis

EXCITING FALL NEWS!

Heart In Your Hand Horsemanship T-Shirts and new brochures are now available!

We already have 30 members on our Heart in Your Hand Yahoo Chat Group.
This group is dedicated to natural horsemanship students lead by Sherry & Keith Jarvis whose aim is to help both the horse and rider to become even more successful by presenting a balanced foundation from which you can build a confident, trusting, respectful relationship, without sacrificing the spirit of either the horse or the human. This is a place to share natural horsemanship philosophies and how horses change our lives including those little victories/defeats that don’t mean anything to the "normal" crowd, to have a place to celebrate/vent leadership issues, blinding flashes of the obvious, or brainstorm creative ideas! We will be able to organize natural play days, tournaments, and post information and announcements of natural horsemanship happenings.

This group is by invitation only. You are officially invited by receiving this newsletter. If you would like to join Heart in Your Hand Horsemanship's Yahoo group please e-mail Leigh the moderator at freeman@diodecom.net

Helping Hooves is off and running with many E.A.P. individual sessions already.

The sessions have been unbelievable, I think I am getting as blessed and learning as much as the people who are wanting and needing the help with personal growth and certain problems they are dealing with.

Melissa and I putting together some L.E.A.D. workshops in the near future.

If you know any organizations, schools, or businesses interested in our training workshops or retreats, please let them know about us. Our brochures are ready for mailing.

Here is a report written by a student who is attending the Calamus Women's Confident Leadership Camp this week.

I must admit I have not worked much with Lexie because of not feeling so good. But she just gave me the nicest suprise the other day when I was working with her. I had separated her from the two old gals and she had been by herself with just chickens and cats for a day. I went through her paces with her and she really did beautifully, she hasn't forgotten a thing. If anything she has gotten better at all the games. I was very pleased with her.

I took her halter off and walked away from her as we were done. She followed me!! I thought "how odd". Then I just started going everywhere in the paddock and she went every where with me!! Then I did it all at a jog, and she trotted and went every where with me!! It was the neatest thing and so much fun!! I really was stunned that she "hooked" up with me. I guess I'm better than nothing, since she doesn't have the two old girls. But even when she's with them she will come up to me for attention and will linger with me long after they have gone.

Today I thought I'd try it again to see if it was a fluke, and it wasn't!! She hooked up with me as soon as I entered the paddock. We jogged and then I started jumping back and forth on the ground and she did it with me. I was laughing out loud as we had the best time! I really feel she has accepted me as a friend and of course that just makes trust all that much better. Just wanted to share this "biggie for us" with you.

Sharon
